How Sappi Limited is Saving the Environment One Tree at a Time

by admin on March 13, 2009

Sappi Limited is a multi-national paper company based out of South Africa with regional offices in North America, European and in their home country. Sappi Limited is committed to environmental preservation as a part of an ongoing business strategy, since the pulp they use for their paper product lines comes from the 5 million hectares owned by the company. Instead of thinking of paper as a finite resources limited by the ability to extract pulp from a forest, Sappi focuses on extending the life of the resource through several companywide measures, an effort which will hopefully earn a pardon from the planet earth.

One of the methods Sappi uses to promote environmental awareness and decrease its carbon footprint is to plant indigenous trees when buyers of Volvo cars make an automobile purchase. The tree plantings replace the resource that Sappi uses to create paper pulp. The tree seedlings are provided by small village entrepreneurs, creating sustainable living careers for villagers.

Another measure designed to alleviate carbon footprints is turning to biomass to fuel power plants and wood processing equipment. A normal logging operation creates tons of biomass waste that in the past, ended up in a landfill or burned, releasing tons of chemicals into the air. By using the biomass as a fuel source to generate thermal energy and steam instead of coal, as well as using rebuilt pulp and paper equipment, Sappi decreases its carbon footprint.

Sappi has also introduced a line of environmentally friendly paper that uses sustainable measures to protect and preserve resources. The Triple Green line uses sugar cane pulp, a byproduct of sugar cane production in the creation of the paper. It is a recycled raw material that keeps waste tonnage from ending up in a landfill. It also employs a chlorine free bleach process that is environmentally friendly, and the wood fiber used is obtained from disadvantaged growers, who obtain the material from afforestation instead of deforestation.

Sappi Limited is taking multiple steps to reduce their carbon footprint and be good environmental stewards for the long term impact they can have on the world. Their commitment to preserving and protecting natural business resources is a sound business strategy that is fundamental to future growth. What would happen to Sappi if the raw commodity they used as the basis for their product disappeared or if a government outlawed certain production practices for environmental impact reasons? Sappi has a vested business interest in going green and renewing the resources they use as a base for their business.
