Many people feel they need to purchase a safe. These sturdy iron boxes have been trusted for centuries to protect valuables. But they aren’t cheap (leastwise, those worth owning usually aren’t) so for many people they may not be a worthwhile investment. How can one tell if they should get a safe or not?
The first question regarding the purchase of a safe is what one intends to protect, and how readily available it needs to be. Sure, you might want to protect family heirlooms, diamond rings, or your rare coin collection, but do you pull it out and show it to people every day or so? Wouldn’t a safe deposit box, with all the protection offered by a bank (including the insurance) be a much better investment? Such small items which aren’t needed routinely don’t need to be kept in the home, where they could easily get lost or stolen. Also, safe deposit boxes have safety measures to ensure only specific persons have access to them, ensuring that thieves can’t merely crack the safe.
There are some valuables which are too big or too often used for a safe deposit box, however, and this mandates the use of a good safe. If you are a hunter or otherwise feel the need to keep guns in the house, a gun safe is invaluable. Guns are one of the most sought after items among thieves, and the one thing you don’t want an intruder getting their hands on. It’s also a good way to keep small children away from the guns, thus preventing tragic household accidents.
A wall safe is also a good idea when you have important documents that need to remain in the house but away from prying eyes. Medical records, wills, tax returns, and other personal documents may be safe-worthy. There are even special fire-proof safes for this purpose, ensuring that the documents will remain unharmed and readable even if the house burns down or is destroyed in some other disaster. These safes, however, are usually inadequate for the storage of cash or other valuables because they are small and light enough to be carried, enabling a thief to pick them up and carry them away.
In general, most households will not need a safe, and the security of a safety deposit box far exceeds anything the average homeowner can afford. Those with guns or other extremely valuable yet oversized collectibles may want to invest in a safe, however. Some items are best stored at home, and a good safe will last almost forever. This also means that it may be possible to get a great deal on a used safe, just ensure that you know the combination and that the tumblers are in good shape before putting it to use!
