Moving always costs more than people anticipate. As such, you should sit down and crunch the numbers before starting out. It may not be worth it to move, and you may need to earn extra money in order to fit your moving cost into the budget. It is, after all, often a lot more complicated than just throwing your stuff into the back of a truck and driving across town!
When you are intending to move, the first thing you should do is consider the increased cost of rent or any increases in mortgage payments, electricity bills, or other regular expenses. It may not be worth moving to a new place, even if the location is better, if the new place won’t be affordable! Additionally, you may have new costs such as increased commuter costs, increased living expenses, and other problems. Be sure to do the research before you move! Don’t let your new place be a disaster just because you can’t afford it!
The second and most obvious expense of a move is actually moving all your stuff! If you have a small apartment and/or not much in the way of stuff, you can usually just rely on friends or rent a truck or trailer. However, if you own a house or otherwise have a lot of property to move, you may have to hire a moving company. Moving companies often go to great lengths to hide the true cost of their services, and as such it’s important to read all of the fine print. Costs vary greatly between moving companies, as do reputations! Don’t trust your valuable things to moving companies with a bad rep unless you want your things going missing or arriving broken. Moving van accidents are a regular problem, and you may be better off simply renting a truck and taking multiple trips. You may even be able to save time and money by breaking it up over several days so as to eliminate the need of hiring movers or renting a truck.
The last thing you need to do in order to estimate the cost of a move is try to figure out how much of your own time it will take, and the time of that of your friends. Taking time off work is actually a big expense, and you will generally have to conduct a move during a weekday when all the stores are open and all the services are available. It may be necessary for you to hire some movers even if you have rented your own truck, because you have to move large, heavy appliances and furniture. You may be able to rely on friends to help, and even if they are nice you should still try to budget in a little money to give them a thank-you meal. Nothing helps the move feel better than beer and pizza after you’re done!
