Planning and Estimating When Adding to Your Home

by Simon on March 20, 2009

Often times, homeowners choose to make additions to their home but are often caught by surprise at how much it costs to add onto their home. You can easily avoid this problem by planning ahead and making a checklist in order to come up with a close estimate. By totalling up an estimate you will be informed as to whether or not you are able to finance an addition.

When trying to come up with an estimate for the total cost of building supplies and work, you must first determine whether an addition to your home will be a do-it-yourself project or if you are going to hire a construction company. Even if you are the handyman type, you will still need to determine whether or not you are going to hire out extra help such as friends and family and what you are willing to pay them.

The second most important part of determining the cost of an addition is by deciding what size the new room will be. Once you have planned out the size of the room make a note of how many windows and doors you will need and how far apart you want to place the studs for your wall. Visit your local home improvement store and speak with a professional. They can help you write a checklist of materials that you will need based on the desired type and size of the addition that you want to build.

When writing up a checklist, keep in mind that you will need important materials and tools such as a hammer, saw, drill, lumber, doors and windows. Determine what type of wall you want to put up, whether you want your walls to be painted, stained, wallpapered, etc. You also need to decide if you want your floors to be tiled or carpeted. Perhaps you are a fan or marble or hardwood. These are all things you need to take into consideration when making out your checklist.

Determine the height of your ceiling, desired light fixtures and anything else that will make your new addition functional. Ask yourself whether your addition will be level with the rest of your house, raised or lowered. This will determine what type of foundation needs to be placed the addition and how high or low the foundation needs to be poured.

By making a checklist and keeping track of the prices of all the necessary materials, you will be well on your way towards creating a beautiful addition for your home that is both affordable and planned for. By listing out what you need and what you want, you are able to avoid frivolous spending habits or accidentally purchasing something that is not needed for your project.
