Slumming in the Slums

by Adam on March 6, 2009

The terms slum, and slum lord are often used in reference to rental property that isn’t well cared for. Those that own it are the slum lords rather than being called landlords. These are often locations such as apartment buildings where very poor people or those with a criminal background reside. While the individuals know that the living conditions aren’t great they feel trapped. On one hand they want to have a good home to live in. Yet on the other they can’t afford to pay any more than they already are. For those with a criminal background, they know many landlords won’t rent to them.

You will find slums in many heavily populated areas. They include New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. However, there are likely slums out there in just about any town you can imagine. The size of the area as well as how run down the living conditions are though can vary by location. Many towns have worked hard to reduce the number of slums offered. They continue to have programs to help fix up such residential areas. They also have programs to help low income people to buy their own homes or to help them pay the cost of living in a decent location.

You will often find more people living in slums than there is really room for. As a result the location quickly becomes over populated. Many of the individuals are out of work too which means many people hanging out during the day. Some are single people but most have children. It is common to find filth outside of a slum area due to no one taking pride in their residence. You may find it to be a high crime area as well as one where drinking and drugs are easily found.

However, that is also a common stereotype that you won’t find with all slums. With the economy being in such a poor state, more people are finding themselves unable to afford their current housing. Finding something more affordable to keep a roof over their heads is what they must do. That could result in them moving into slum areas that they have never had to consider in the past.

Slum lords often get a very bad reputation. They are viewed as being uncaring about the people that live in their structures. Many of them though feel they are offering a service to those that don’t have very much money. They feel it is a better alternative for them than to be living out there on the streets. They also would like to remind people that they don’t make very much money from the property that they do rent out.

As a result, they don’t have the funds readily available to fix up the rentals. Even with programs to assist them though many of them choose not to invest in their properties. They have found it to be a useless battle due to many of the people living there not taking care of the property like they should. They may have plenty of rules too but find they are almost impossible to enforce with their properties. In fact, it isn’t uncommon for some slum lords to be afraid to approach their renters due to fear of violence.
