Tips to Save Money in Your Home by Going Green

by Simon on March 30, 2009

There have been many families and individuals alike who have found themselves struggling through financial hardships. The last thing anyone wants is to be slammed by an unexpectedly high utility bill. You can save yourself from this dilemma by going green within your home and saving money annually and even monthly.

There are a number of culprits within your home that suck away energy and money that often get overlooked. Most of the time, when a person takes a shower, they do not just use straight hot water. You can turn down the temperature on your water heater to save you money and take short showers instead of long baths on a daily basis. While a bath can often be relaxing, filling up your bathtub everyday can lead to expensive water bills at the end of every month due to consumption.

If your budget allows, purchase energy saving appliances and devices such as a programmable thermostat. You can set the temperature on the thermostat so that it is not heating and cooling your home as much when no one is there. The great thing about programmable thermostats is that you can set them to bring your home back up to a comfortable temperature shortly before everyone does arrive back home. Energy saving appliances, while they may seem costly at first, are highly effective at saving you money annually.

For those who simply can not break the habit of turning off lights in uninhabited rooms, try replacing standard bulbs with fluorescent ones. Fluorescent bulbs consume a lot less energy which lowers your bill, therefore, if you leave a light on, you don’t have to worry as much about receiving a high electricity bill in the mail.

Cover up drafts and use blackout curtains to save your heating and air conditioning units. Blackout curtains block out the heat of the sun during the hot summer months which means your air conditioner will not have to run continuously to keep the house cool whereas covering up drafts means that you are not losing valuable heat underneath doors and through drafty windows.

Save your appliances from doing unnecessary work which can cost you money. Instead or running the dryer during the warmer months of the spring and summer hang your clothes out to dry on a clothes line. Instead of letting your dishwasher do all of the work, if you do not have enough dishes to load it all the way, wash your dishes by hand and let them air dry.

Going green doesn’t always imply improving your garden design.  By following these go green tips can help you save money and energy within your home. Cutting back on those high energy bills is sure to be a major plus when finances are tough. Lowering your bills can help you use money for more important things such as groceries or even add more spending money to your budget.
